Suicide Awareness
Another Resource: Suicide Prevention for Faith Leaders

SEPTEMBER IS SUICIDE PREVENTION AWARENESS MONTH!  WE CAN ALL SAVE LIVES!

Faith Connections on Mental Illness (FCMI) is sponsoring a FREE Suicide Prevention Training, QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) on Saturday, September 14, 2024 from 10 AM until 11:30 AM. Location: St. Thomas More. 940 Carmichael St, Chapel Hill, NC 27514

Just like CPR, QPR can save lives. In one short session (1.5 hours) you can learn 3 (three) simple steps that may help avert tragedy and direct a person in crisis to the professional care they need.

To register or learn more please contact Marianne Mitchell ([email protected]).

QPR's mission is to reduce suicidal behaviors and
save lives by providing innovative, practical and proven suicide prevention training. This training is suitable for adults of any age and outlines the specific steps and dialogue to use when helping someone who appears to be thinking about ending their life. The signs of crisis are all around us. We believe that quality education empowers all people, regardless of their background, to make a positive difference in the life of someone they know.

Out of the Darkness Walks are particularly important events for the AFSP North Carolina Chapter. The Walks are our largest fundraisers and provide significant financial support to keep our programs and services free of charge to help individuals and families affected by suicide. COVID-19 has not stopped the mental health needs of our community and we continue to provide free programs every day.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention North Carolina Chapter hosts Out of the Darkness Walks throughout the state each fall. Register today for a Walk near you and join us as we walk to fight suicide.

September is Suicide Awareness Month

By recognizing September as National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, you will be helping to destigmatize suicide so that your faith community can become a place in which suicide is prevented or reduced and members who have lost a loved one to suicide can receive compassionate ministry.

Listed below are links to resources provided by Faith Connections on Mental Illness Task Force on Suicide Prevention/Reduction that we feel could provide helpful information including sample prayers and liturgies from different faith traditions. You can select something to use during your worship service as well as in your communications.

  9:00 am: Run
10:00 am: Walk
11:00 am: Festival
or Virtually!!

The 36th Annual Thad & Alice Eure Walk for Hope Walk & Festival raises funds and fights stigma for mental illness.

FCMI does not have a team - but our own dear Geetha Balagopal does.

You can help support Geetha, who has helped the FCMI NAMIWalks team be a top contender for so many years.
Since she lost her daughter Priya to suicide, Geetha has been a tireless advocate for suicide prevent programs.

This year's walk will be held 6 days before what would have been Priya's 33rd birthday. In her honor, Geetha hopes to have at least 33 walkers.

If you want to support her, please consider joining the Walk for Hope.

You can join as a virtual team member or attend the walk/festival in person on the ANGUS BARN grounds. Registering as a walker does come with a charge, but proceeds support a good cause - and you get a T-shirt!
