Connecting Faith Resources with Mental Health
Keynote Speaker - Harold Koenig, MD
Dr. Harold G. Koenig is director of the Center for Spirituality, Theology, and Health at Duke University Medical Center, where he also serves on the faculty as Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and Associate Professor of Medicine. He is on the faculty at King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, as a Distinguished Adjunct Professor. Dr. Koenig has published extensively in the fields of mental health, geriatrics, and religion, with nearly 400 scientific peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, and 40 books in print or in preparation, including "The Healing Power of Faith," "Faith and Mental Health," and "Spiritual Caregiving." Dr. Koenig has given Congressional testimony concerning the benefits of religion and spirituality on public health, and travels world-wide to give workshops, seminars, and keynote presentations on the topic. He is considered one of the world’s top experts on religion and health.

Warren Kinghorn, MD, ThD Dr. Kinghorn is assistant professor of psychiatry and pastoral and moral theology at Duke University Medical Center and Duke Divinity School, and also a staff Psychiatrist at the Durham VA Medical Center. His interests include the role of faith communities in caring for people with mental health problems, the moral and theological dimensions of combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder, and the contributions of the theology and philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas to contemporary debates about psychiatric diagnosis, psychiatric technology and human flourishing. |
Guest Speaker
Tonya Armstrong, PhD, MTS Dr. Armstrong is Minister of Congregational Care & Counseling at Union Baptist Church in Durham where she is Training Coordinator and Continuing Education Coordinator for Stephen Ministry, and Grief Support Group Facilitator. She also is director of The Armstrong Center for Hope in Durham. Dr. Armstrong specializes in psychological and spiritual wellness, taking a client-led bio-psycho-social-spiritual view of the person in community, including couples and groups. Her expertise in practical service to members of the faith community will help guide us in developing such ministries in our own faith communities. |
