Empowering Students Through Mental Health Advocacy: An Introduction to NAMI on Campus
Please join us for a special presentation on NAMI on Campus and Youth Mental Health Advocacy. This program will introduce the work of NAMI on Campus (NOC), a student-led initiative that brings mental health education, awareness, and peer support directly to colleges and universities. We will discuss how NAMI on Campus clubs help reduce stigma, connect students to resources, and create safer, more supportive school environments.
Speakers will include Sara Newhan, Youth Initiatives Outreach Coordinator for NAMI North Carolina, who will share about her role in supporting youth and young adults across the state and helping establish and sustain NAMI on Campus clubs. Also joining will be Nicholas Menzel, President of NAMI’s UNC NOC, who will speak about student leadership, peer support, and what it looks like to run a NAMI on Campus club from a student's perspective.
The speakers will discuss the importance of bringing mental health awareness to schools and on campuses, and why early intervention matters. Research shows that 1 in 5 young people experiences a mental health condition, and 50% of all mental health conditions begin by age 14, with 75% by age 24. Early education, support, and access to resources can reduce long-term impacts and help students succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.
